Climate

As Borusan Logistics, our focus areas in Climate-Human-Innovation are themed around decarbonization, social benefits, and the digital transformation of processes. Our main goal is to implement initiatives that support emission reduction in the industry and provide environmental and socio-economic benefits for employees, customers, and suppliers. In the Climate Focus Area, Borusan Logistics has identified two main themes for itself: "Decarbonization" and "Plastic-Free Initiatives."

Decarbonization

In the focus area of decarbonization, our goal is to develop applications that support emission reduction in the industry and to achieve a reduction in carbon emissions both in total and relative to business volume through appropriate process design.

Plastic-Free Initiatives

As part of our goal to reduce the proportion of plastic used and generated as waste, we aim to achieve ton-based reduction and transformation of plastic. Through this initiative, we not only contribute to reducing plastic but also generate savings. We have financed our sustainability projects with the income obtained from the recycling of waste, contributing to our commitment to sustainability.

Decarbonization

ROUTE - LOAD OPTIMIZATION

Through projects that aim to reduce and optimize the number of trips, vehicle occupancy levels, and traveled distances, we create the most efficient distribution route by considering parameters such as delivery dates and recipient locations. Leveraging our digital infrastructure and innovations from our R&D center, we adapt new technologies to our operations, preventing at least 10,000 tons of equivalent carbon emissions annually. We reduce empty returns and prevent unnecessary kilometers traveled.

CARBON-NEUTRAL BUSINESS MODELS

We adapt to evolving vehicle technologies and transform our transportation vehicles and methods. Through approaches such as alternative fuel usage, intermodal transportation services, and the adoption of new technology products that reduce emissions, we develop carbon-neutral transportation models in the logistics sector. The transformation of our fleet results in an annual emission reduction of at least 2-5% compared to the previous year. Managing our Fast Card system in all road transportation operations, we prevent the use of subpar oil, thereby mitigating supplier-induced CO2 emissions each year. Opting for Euro 6 and above engines in our fleet vehicles helps prevent CO2 emissions, and we ensure its sustainability through route optimization and business unit-specific awareness programs.

RENEWABLE ENERGY USAGE

Utilizing the Solar Energy Systems in our warehouses, we prevent 500 – 700 tons of equivalent carbon emissions annually through clean and renewable energy usage. We cover over 50% of the consumption at the Tuzla Operations Center from renewable sources, balancing the remaining emissions to sustain operations in carbon-neutral facilities.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

We address inefficiencies by converting our warehouse equipment to electric and li-ion, reducing both our electricity consumption and carbon emissions. All our electric devices/equipment in facilities are of high energy efficiency class, utilizing solar energy, making them measurable and motion-sensitive, ensuring minimal energy consumption. Monitoring and measuring activities in our facilities enable us to instantly detect and prevent energy inefficiencies and leaks. Since 2011, as the first logistics company to be certified, we have reduced our energy consumption by nearly 1000 TEP through the ISO 50001 Energy Management System.

Digitalization in Carbon Emission Measurement and Reporting

Through our ISO 14064-compliant carbon reporting system, we provide customized carbon emission reports to our customers and undergo verification audits annually. As the first company in the logistics sector with the ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Verification certificate, we make a difference. We develop applications to track our measurements in digital format using our in-house software development teams and monitor them in the digital environment

AFFORESTATION

Borusan Logistics has planted over 600 thousand trees to date, contributing to the reduction of our carbon emission impact. We collaborate with Non-Governmental Organizations as part of our afforestation activities. In addition to all our internal events, we continue afforestation and carbon emission offsetting activities as part of all our projects.

TRANSITION TO A CARBON-NEUTRAL COMMERCIAL SYSTEM AND COMPLIANCE

Recognizing the impact of climate change in the logistics sector due to the rapid increase in greenhouse gases, we are aware of our influence. Within this context, our expert team addresses our Green Deal compliance strategy and the risks and opportunities in transitioning to a carbon-neutral commercial system. We implement agile solutions that make a difference, encompassing our stakeholder ecosystem.

BIOMETHANE PRODUCTION FROM ORGANIC WASTE

We collaborate with Fazla Gıda to send the organic waste generated during food preparation to a biogas plant. This process involves collecting organic waste and transmitting it to biogas facilities to produce electricity. In 2023, we plan to expand the project to include post-meal waste and other organic waste.

Plastic-Free

"SUYUM MATARAMDA" PROJECT

We have implemented water purification systems in our Tuzla Operations Center and Çatalca warehouses, discontinuing the use of plastic PET bottles and water dispensers. Additionally, we have transitioned to water purification systems in our central offices, creating plastic-free offices. This initiative has resulted in a reduction in plastic usage, and we have distributed glass water bottles to our employees.

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC REDUCTION

Starting from the cafeterias, we have reduced our single-use plastics. This not only prevents plastic waste and usage but also leads to savings in terms of individual packaging, single-use cups for water, yogurt cups, and single-serving portions of salt/pepper/salad dressings.

TARPAULINS PROVIDE HOMES FOR OUR ANIMAL FRIENDS!

Through collaboration with Fazla Gıda and Boğaziçi University, we donated truck tarps to animal shelters, ensuring the reuse of over 360 kg of tarpaulins. Additionally, we built shelters for our animal friends, providing them with a home.

END TO OPERATIONAL PLASTIC USAGE

We have transitioned from using bubble wrap in box packaging to recycled kraft paper and replaced plastic tape with water-based tape for box sealing. This shift has prevented the use of plastic. Additionally, we tested the use of reusable nets for pallet securing with stretch film, marking our first step in reducing stretch usage for internal movements, a first in the industry.

ZERO WASTE CERTIFICATE

We obtained the zero waste certificate for 2 of our facilities, and the applications for 7 more facilities have been completed. In 2023, we will continue to certify our facilities in compliance with the infrastructure and zero waste regulations.

PRODUCTION OF RAMPS FROM END-OF-LIFE TIRES

Through collaboration with Fazla Gıda, we have gained 250 kg of tires and produced ramp wedges for docking ramps. This initiative resulted in cost-saving due to the sourcing of the materials. Projects like producing durable rubber operational products from discarded vehicle tires aim to create environmental, social, and financial benefits.

TEXTILE WASTE RECYCLING PROJECT

Through this project, we plan to collect textile waste from our facilities and gift recycled material-made bags and pencil cases at the "Green Kids Festival" scheduled to take place in 2023.

"Sürdürülebilirliği Fark Et" Movement

In order for the business world to contribute to Turkey's 2053 Net Zero Carbon goal, it is essential to embrace sustainable consumption habits. In 2022, we initiated a communication project to create awareness in the workplace with the aim of promoting resource conservation. As part of this communication movement:

"

We formed the "Be Aware!" Team consisting of volunteers. We conduct internal awareness campaigns within the team and aim to spread awareness with these colleagues.

We initiated Inspiring the Future training sessions.

We participated in the "Be Aware" project by Sustainable Consumption and Production Association (SKD), progressing by completing all the actions defined in the system.

In our communications with all customers/suppliers, we provide presentations that raise awareness about our sustainability goals and projects, as well as the achievements from completed projects.
