Another “Green” Step by Borusan Lojistik

BORUSAN PORT NOW “GREEN/ECO PORT” CERTIFIED!

Borusan Port now owns the Green Port/Eco Port certificate issued by the Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications.

Borusan Lojistik Gemlik Port passed the “Green/Eco Port” inspections carried out by the Turkish Standard Institute (TSE) in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications and received its “Green/Eco Port” certification.

Borusan Port was subjected to an extremely difficult evaluation process and successfully completed the second phase of the inspections carried out by the Ministry and TSE specialists, earning the right to hold “Green/Eco Port” certification.

Implemented by the world’s leading port facilities, Green Port certification has been in effect in Turkey since late 2014.

Borusan Lojistik Deputy General Manager İbrahim Dölen: “We aim to be a green country not through our words but through our actions.”

Speaking about Borusan Port’s achievement at getting its Green/Eco Port certification, Borusan Lojistik General Manager İbrahim Dölen highlighted that this certificate is regarded as a very respectable and important competitive element between international maritime transport companies and world ports. He continued;

“We are highly aware that the future of our work, our environment and our country are all connected to each other. This certificate is an important step on this path, but it definitely won’t be the last. Treating nature as our friend and being on the green side will never be just words for us. We aim to be a green country not through our words but through our actions. We will continue to lead our sector in the same way we lead all our fields of activity.”

Step-by-Step Road to Green at Borusan Port

Seeing environmental sustainability as a priority area of investment since the day of its foundation, Borusan Lojistik has many innovative and exemplary practices to its name in this area.

Starting in 2004, it continued its journey of sustainability-based management systems with the 9001 Quality, 18001 Occupational Health and Safety and 14001 Environment Management Systems certificates, and then gained ISO 50001 Energy Management System and ISO 14064 Carbon Footprint Verification certification in 2012. With these important documents, Borusan Lojistik stands out as Turkey’s pioneering logistics company.

Meanwhile in 2005, Borusan Port took its first significant step in preventing the pollution of the sea and acted as a pioneer in the industry by obtaining the Waste Reception License. With the Hazardous Materials Compliance Certification obtained in 2016, it has become a pioneering company in the Gemlik Region and proven its continued commitment to the Green/Eco Port vision.

In 2016 it continued its operational efficiency efforts and achieved 1.2 million kWh of savings by transitioning all fixtures over to the LED system through the LED Conversion Project. It then went on to commission the second phase of the project and make a saving of 1.5 million kWh. In addition, it improved its emission rates by 94% by implementing the RTG Electrical Conversion Project, ensuring the protection of 5,768 trees and meeting the annual oxygen demand of 11,600 people. With its waste recovery system, Borusan Port continues to protect at least 10,000 trees a year. It also plants a tree for every 10 containers it handles in order to bring carbon emissions down to the lowest level in its operations. Setting its goal as planting 1,000,000 trees by 2019, Borusan Lojistik has already planted over 500,000.

With the recycling and improvements made at the port, 3,000m3 of wood was heat treated, protecting 12,332 trees. This number is equal to the annual oxygen needs of 25,000 people.
