BORUSAN LOJİSTİK / RESPONSES TO INFOMAG QUESTIONS

*How do you benefit from information and communication technologies in your company? How do you incorporate these into your work processes?

Borusan Lojistik was restructured in 2000 to provide an integrated logistics service. We heavily allocated our investments on creating the necessary infrastructure to provide end-to-end solutions to our customers. We have built our infrastructure on the basis of information and communication technologies. In the logistics sector, technological infrastructure is of great importance in terms of being able to at international quality standards and have competitive power. At Borusan Lojistik, we have a strong network infrastructure and online applications. All operations in our corporation have been standardized with the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system attached to the SAP R3 backbone. The system, which makes it possible to store the information on a single database, provides Borusan Lojistik with a significant level of efficiency. We have recently implemented e-business applications, which have been among our primary goals since our establishment. Thanks to the modules that are on our website, organizations receiving services from Borusan Lojistik can follow their exports/imports and can examine customer and monitor vendor accounts. With the inquiry module, customers can create their own questions and send them to Borusan Lojistik. In this way, we are continually measuring our customer satisfaction on the website.
We can also maintain our relationships with our customers via the “special customer communication area” created on our website. With the e-business applications that are developed within Borusan Lojistik, our customers can track all their logistics needs from start to end online. I would also like to point out that you can watch Gemlik Pier 24/7 on the internet from 12 live cams. This means that ship owners are able to both see and check the work going on at the port.

*How does this technology affect your work? Its profitability/ opportunity costs/ growth? (We would appreciate if you provided numerical information such as the drop rate of error margin thanks to this technology, and thus the increase in your profitability, etc.)

Logistics is a very comprehensive service area. The service provided is not limited to transportation only. Borusan Lojistik has been structured to meet all of its customers’ needs in stages such as quality control, package opening, customs clearance, insurance, surveillance services, assembly, consolidation, opening packaging, re-packaging, etc., from the raw material to the consumption of end-product. Our objective is to create added value for our customers. Our ability to provide fault-free and quality service in this extremely complex and detailed process is directly proportional to how much we have benefited from information and communication technologies. At Borusan Lojistik, we consider investing in information technologies and making use of the opportunities offered as prerequisites for pioneering the development of the sector in Turkey. The technologies we use provide productivity in particular and therefore profitability and competitiveness to our corporation. The ERP system linked to the SAP R3 backbone at Borusan Lojistik enables standardization of data and easy access to it by all employees. At the same time, the system makes it possible to perform flexible analyses. Logistics is one of the sectors that can benefit the most from internet technologies. Because the work covers an information flow process. The ability of customers to monitor these processes online is accompanied by a high level of satisfaction. Borusan Lojistik has website where our customers can fulfill all their logistic needs electronically. With e-logistics applications, we can provide our customers with an error-free and quality service in a much shorter time, and we can reduce our costs.

*What do you expect from information and communication technology companies and their products?

When investing in information and communication technologies at Borusan Lojistik, we undergo a rigorous research process and determine our expectations according to the purpose of the work we do. Our most important expectations from the technologies we use consist of the ability to work online, provide top-level security, 24/7 availability and scalability. The technologies that our firm acquires are continuously developed. When investing in technology, we believe that having the right business partners is of great importance in terms of achieving the targeted productivity. We prefer expert firms that invest in line with the work we do in this regard. We can provide technology and solutions that meet all our expectations from companies familiar with our fields and way of doing business, who understand the reasons why we use the technology that we have obtained.

*Do you have a technology that you use differently compared to other logistics firms? If yes, what is it and why do you use it?

As far as we know, we are the only logistics company that uses SAP infrastructure in Turkey. However, our port and transport management systems and our warehouse management system have been developed online. The internet allows us to integrate with our customers and provide a service that is trackable and mobile.

Borusan Lojistik was one of the product and service sponsors of “Bilişim ‘01 A Cebit Event” in 2001 and 2002. Our company provided the land, marine and air transportation, customs clearance, all kinds of equipment and human resources support to companies participating in the fair from Turkey and abroad. We conducted a successful operation in trade fair logistics which covers all the services necessary for the realization of a fair operation, from the receipt of the products to be displayed, to the safe transportation of all stand materials to the exhibition area.

* Have you worked with B2C firms in particular?

Borusan Lojistik includes B2B solutions in its focus on services. Consumer logistics is not within our scope right now.
