A protocol was signed in the Governorship of Bursa on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, regarding the 24-class secondary school Borusan will build in Gemlik and the mosque whose construction the Kocabıyık Family will undertake. In addition to Borusan Holding Founder and Honorary President Asım Kocabıyık, Bursa Governor Şahabettin Harput and Deputy Mayor of Gemlik Refik Yılmaz attended the signing ceremony.

Borusan continues its social responsibility investments in the Gemlik region. As part of this the company will build a 24-class secondary school to be named “Borusan Secondary School”, while the Kocabıyık Family will build a mosque in Gemlik. The protocols for the school and mosque projects were signed in the ceremony attended by Borusan Holding Founder and Honorary President Asım Kocabıyık, Borusan Holding Executive Committee Members Bülent Demircioğlu and Mehmet Betil, Bursa Governor Şahabettin Harput, Bursa Provincial National Education Director Atilla Gülsar, Deputy Mayor of Gemlik Refik Yılmaz, and Bursa Provincial Mufti Mahmut Gündüz.

In his speech during the signing ceremony, Bursa Governor Şahabettin Harput thanked Borusan and Borusan Holding Founder and Honorary President Asım Kocabıyık;

“We have a saying: The blessed of mankind is the one who is the most beneficial for mankind. We have seen Mr. Asım Kocabıyık and his family provide services of all kinds, not only where we are now, but in every corner of the country. Their contribution to the development, industrialization and growth of our country will not be forgotten. Today, they have honored us by providing two more services. Asım Kocabıyık has in effect become the spiritual sponsor of our town. I hope both of these services will serve to benefit Bursa and Gemlik.”

At the protocol signing ceremony, Borusan Holding Founder and Honorary President Asım Kocabıyık said the following;

“Now with 68 years of experience under its belt, in 1972 Borusan decided to add to its facilities in Istanbul and purchased the facility area in Gemlik, seeing its potential in the iron and steel industry. Production then started in 1976. But now that the district’s population has risen from what was 17,000 back then to 100,000, the Governor of Bursa and the Mayor of Gemlik have declared that they need a new secondary school and a larger mosque to replace the current one. In response, Borusan Holding has accepted the challenge to build a new school and I have offered to undertake the construction of the mosque on behalf of the Kocabıyık Family.”

Reminding us that the relationship between Borusan companies and Gemlik goes back a long time, Asım Kocabıyık continued;

“Gemlik is a very important and valuable district for us. We strive to support the development of this district and fulfill the needs of the people of Gemlik. I have always deemed supporting education as a national duty. I know for a fact that our country wouldn’t have been able to develop if it wasn’t for the well-educated generations. Since our arrival at Gemlik in 1972, we have tried to fulfill Gemlik’s needs in many areas, especially in education. I believe that the school we’ll build will deliver a strong basic education to the successful managers, business people, teachers, engineers, and doctors of tomorrow. Meanwhile, I hope that the new mosque being constructed on behalf of my family will answer the needs of Gemlik.”

Refik Yılmaz, Deputy Mayor of Gemlik responded with the following message; “We thank Asım Kocabıyık, Founder and Honorary President of Borusan, one of the well-established corporations in our country, for the two great constructions that he has bestowed upon our town.”
