JOINT PROJECT FROM BORUSAN LOJİSTİK AND MAERSK DENİZCİLİK
Borusan Lojistik and Maersk Denizcilik, the world’s largest container transportation company, have achieved significant success in a joint project to increase the speed of crane movement at Borusan Port. The first joint project to be carried out by a port operator and ship agency in Turkey was realized using the 6 Sigma methodology applied at both Borusan Lojistik and Maersk Denizcilik. Providing high operational efficiency in many areas, especially for the staying period of ships in the port, the project was introduced after a meeting between officials from both companies.
Borusan Lojistik and Maersk Denizcilik, which have maintained a strong strategic partnership since 2001, have successfully carried out a project to increase port efficiency. The project is important for the Turkish logistics and container transportation sectors in that it is the first joint project to be undertaken by a port operator and a ship agency in Turkey and is shaped by the 6 Sigma methodology applied at both Borusan Lojistik and Maersk Denizcilik.
Combining their expertise in continuous improvement and 6 Sigma, the two companies signed a joint project to reduce the staying period of vessels by approximately 10% by increasing the hourly movement speeds of the Maersk vessels stopping at Borusan Port. As a result, mechanisms were set up for alerting all persons of interest when the work flow in the port is obstructed or is not meeting the target. The project team, consisting of expert staff from both companies, focused on crane movement speeds, allowing the speed of information flow and planning process to increase significantly. As a result of the work completed within a short period of three months, the handling speed per crane was improved and high efficiency and savings were obtained in the operations of both companies.
In the first phase of the port efficiency improvement project, a 6% increase in crane speeds was achieved. This improvement is expected to increase to 10% over time. Given that a container port today has a minimum installation value of $100 million and a container ship value is close to this figure, it is even better understood how important a 1% efficiency increase is for both shipowners and terminal operators.
Pointing out that the project sets an example for future cooperation opportunities in port operations and container transportation in our country, Borusan Lojistik Deputy General Manager of Port Operations Özgür Soy said;
“We aim to protect our strong position in solidarity with our customers and suppliers with a win-win approach throughout this current global economic crisis. In such a difficult period, we have crowned our long-term cooperation with Maersk Denizcilik with this project. Ships, ports and equipment are assets into which huge numbers are invested and to which very serious capital is attached. Their efficient usage has a great effect on profitability. Both we and Maersk Denizcilik were dissatisfied with the speed of movement considered as standard in our region and we thought: ‘What can we do about it?’ We analyzed the processes using 6 Sigma methodology and saw that the scheduling can be improved with faster and more efficient sharing of the information on both sides.”
Bilgehan Kuey, General Manager of Maersk Shipping Operations Department, noted that the joint project for increasing terminal productivity to provide better service to customers and improve business processes, has achieved more success than expected.
“The fact that both institutions are open to continual development and the adoption of customer-focused operations is one of the success factors of the project. Under today’s economic conditions, there are two main ways of reducing costs: decreasing expenses and increasing productivity. We based our project on listening to the voice of our customers, aiming to increase productivity without compromising customer satisfaction and without adversely affecting our cost structure. This step taken together with Borusan Lojistik is of great importance. We now believe that joint action and business development methods should be adopted in every sector.”
