TransMedya Green Logistics File

Venue: Transmedia
Subject: Green Logistics
Spokesman: Borusan Lojistik Deputy General Manager İbrahim Dölen

1- How have your customer's green logistics needs evolved over the past 5 years?

I find it useful to refer to the general demographic structure of our country in order to answer this question. We have a young population. The rapid increase in the number of universities, especially over the last 10 years, was a great step toward educating this young population. That in turn created awareness on vital issues, such as the environment we are responsible for protecting for future generations. Of course, this also has a positive impact on the business world as well. When we look at the sector as a whole, we see its environmental influences especially in terms of resource consumption and air pollution. We also know that customers prefer to work with companies that are able to minimize these effects. As Borusan Lojistik, I can say that we are adapting to this change quickly because we have determined our main objective as being the sustainable development of our activities on the basis of the preservation of natural resources. In that respect, we design and develop our Port, International Transportation, Domestic Distribution and Warehousing services within the framework of our environmentally focused approach. We also carry out our logistics activities by considering their impact on the environment and making the necessary measurements.

2-   What kind of environmental practices and services have you introduced to meet these demands?

As Borusan Lojistik, we have defined our basic objective as sustainable development of our activities based on the preservation of natural resources. In this respect, we prioritize focusing on our stakeholders on: providing the necessary resources and the information, ensuring compliance with the law and other relevant requirements, being proactive with a focus on continuous development. In 2004, we received the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard certification under our "preventive action" policy stated in our policy. In addition, we carried out in 2012 the ISO 50001 Energy Management System and ISO 14064 Carbon Footprint Verification, making us the first logistics company in Turkey being awarded with the two documents at the same time.

With the system we have established for our Turkish Logistics business unit, we have prevented the use of oil number 10 and ensured fuel consumption according to the regulations in all our land transportation operations, including our own vehicles and those of our suppliers as well as spot market vehicles. Thanks to this approach, we prevent 33,294 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

We are able to respond to customer expectations through our proactive work on sustainability. We are designing and developing our services and new business functions in line with customer expectations under our fundamental principle of ‘adding value to the society’ and our environment focused approaches. In this context, we have launched many projects. For instance, we brought to life the led transformation project at the port we opened in 2013. Within the scope of the project, we switched to the led system by changing our fixtures, allowing us to. save 1.2 million kWh of energy annually. Starting in September, 2016, we will have achieved additional savings of 1.5 million kWh by implementing the second phase of our project. Following improvements to our work processes, we have heat treated 3,000 meter cubes of trees at the port, thus saving 12,332 trees from being felled. On this count, we have met the annual oxygen requirement of 25,000 people.

We are currently in the process of applying for the "GREEN Port document". We have completed our initial audits and are about to complete a successful audit process. At the end of this process, Borusan Port will be one of the first ports to have the Green Port status. This is a result we can all be proud of. We are making the investments necessary to carry out our business on a sustainable basis without hurting the environment this year as well. We call ourselves the green players in a gray sector and we are continuing on this path without the slightest deviation from our principles.

I would also like to mention the 'Blade Lifter' technology, which was used for the first time in Turkey and only on a few projects abroad. Over the past few months, we have transported 10 sets of turbines for the Fuatres Wind Power Plant. We transported 30 blades 1,100 meters to 300 meters above sea level. To minimize the effect on the environment, we had to move the blades at a certain angle. Thanks to the 'Blade Lifter' technology we used in this context, we carried the blades at a 50 degree angle and prevented 10,000 truck loads of earthwork coming out. We also prevented more than 100,000m3 of soil loss, protecting the ecological balance in the process.

Our most important activity, on the other hand, is our project called ‘We are so hooked on Green’ for Borusan Lojistik, which we are carrying out to prevent any environmental damage due to fossil fuels we use for our logistics activities. In 2011, we signed the ‘7 Tree Forests’ protocol with ÇEKÜL. It is our target to plant 1,000,000 trees by 2018. Through this project, we ensure our business partners are indirectly participating in the campaign. We plant one tree for every 10 runs and every 10 containers handled in the 7 Tree Forests. In other words, each time a customer chooses to work with us, we plant one tree for every 10 runs and every 10 containers handled in the 7 Tree Forests.

Planting trees is a part of our celebrations; each of the employees' birthdays, newborn babies and marriage ceremonies are celebrated with a tree.
